Do you need a visa?

Yes. China is explicitly listed under "Travellers who need a visa" on Canada's own entry-requirements page: citizens of the listed countries need a valid visitor visa and a valid passport to visit or transit through Canada. China isn't on the separate, shorter list of visa-required countries whose citizens can instead apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) — so a visitor visa, not an eTA, is the correct route for a Chinese passport holder.

The eligibility criteria

The decision maker must be satisfied you have a valid travel document, are in good health, have no criminal or immigration-related convictions, have ties (such as a job, home, or financial assets) that will lead you to return to your home country, will leave Canada at the end of your visit, and have enough money for your stay. You may also need a medical exam and a letter of invitation from someone who lives in Canada.

This assumes: an adult, ordinary passport holder, resident in and applying from China, self-funding their own trip, visiting Canada as a tourist. If that doesn't match your situation — for example, a business visit or visiting family — some of this may not apply. China's own visa office (covering Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou) also publishes its own supplementary document checklist with requirements not included here — including a copy of your national identity document and a completed Family Information Form (IMM 5707) — check IRCC's visa office instructions for China directly before you apply.
