Preparing for: Me

Each traveler's checked steps and document readiness are tracked separately here to help you prepare. Depending on official guidance, each traveler may need a separate application, fee, appointment, or evidence — check the relevant official guidance for each person. Tracking preparation here does not change how any application is actually handled.

  1. Since 3 November 2024, the Embassy of Japan has entrusted VFS Global with the facilitation of the Japan visa application process — the Embassy no longer accepts visa applications directly. In principle, applications through VFS must be booked online in advance (reservations for the month after next are generally released on the 15th of each month), and during busy periods (mid-March to early June and mid-September to late October) you may wait more than a month for your desired appointment. If you need an urgent appointment, VFS also accepts same-day, first-come-first-served applicants waiting for cancellations, though this isn't guaranteed.

  2. Your passport, a completed visa application form with photo, your flight itinerary, proof you can pay your travel expenses, and a filled-in itinerary for your stay in Japan.

  3. The standard processing period, assuming the application is complete, is 7 working days from the date of application submission to VFS Global to the earliest issuance of the visa. Incomplete documents extend this, and cases needing comprehensive document examination may take several months — apply well in advance.
