The minimum processing time from submission of the visa application to collection of the passport at the Japan Visa Application Centre is 12 working days for applications received in Abuja and 14 working days for applications received in Lagos, provided there are no problems with the content of the application. It may take longer if there are a large number of applicants, and if there are doubts about the content of the application it may take more than a month for further review by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Tokyo).

  1. Nigerian nationals are required to obtain a visa regardless of the purpose or duration of their trip. Since March 2025, visa applications and passport collections are processed at the Japan Visa Application Centres (JVACs) in Abuja and Lagos, operated by VFS Global — the Embassy only accepts direct applications for urgent humanitarian cases, diplomatic/official business, or applicants invited by the Government of Japan. Applications by a proxy are not permitted in principle.

  2. You can book an appointment at the Japan Visa Application Centres online up to three months in advance — a booking-availability window, not a rule about how early you may submit relative to your travel date.

  3. Your passport, a completed visa application form with photo, your flight itinerary, proof you can pay your travel expenses, and a filled-in itinerary for your stay in Japan.

  4. The minimum processing time from submission to passport collection is 12 working days for applications received in Abuja and 14 working days for applications received in Lagos, provided there are no problems with the application. It may take longer if there are a large number of applicants, and more than a month if the application needs further review by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo.
